Re: [T3] Timing

ChrisV=> but the notch on the distributor rim
=> will not get over there unless I take out the
=> entire distributor and re-position it.

The mark on the distributor rim has no bearing on your timing at all. Having
run the TDC procedure, you now know that one of three conditions is true:

* Your distributor may be non-stock. You can confirm this by checking the VW
part number on the body of the distributor. A Type 3 unit's number will
begin with 311. If this is the problem, adapt to it until you can find the
right unit.

* Your distributor may not be properly seated in the distributor drive.
Check that the distributor body is all the way down in the case, and that
you can't spin the rotor by hand. If this is the problem, pull the
distributor, line up the drive dog and reinstall.

* Your distributor drive may not be installed correctly. If it's not one of
the other two, it's this. If it's this, it's better to just adapt to it than
try to fix it now. This often happens when Type 1 guys rebuild Type 3
engines.

If it's not stock or the drive is off, just ignore the mark.

Next problem:

=> no matter where I turned the engine, I couldn't
=> even get a .04mm feeler to fit in the gap ...
=> there was no play...is this normal?

When the valve is properly adjusted, you can feel the rocker move a little
off the valve stem.

Note first that you should be using an .006" or .08mm feeler guage, not
.04mm.

Did you try the #3 valves as well? The mark for #1 and #3 is the same.

If the cam is not in firing position, the valve springs are always
compressed unevenly for a given cylinder. Did they appear to be even, or
different?

You were checking the spring side of the rocker, right?

=> there was oil dripping ... could this because the
=> car is on a decline?

Yes.
