What am I missing? > Dainty hands? ;-) Lift the cover off the housing; hold and turn dynamo pulley clockwise. It may need some increase in the tension by deflecting the belt, but it tightens the underneath anyway. Done it many times - never yet been bitten (even by the Beetle) - just keep the fingers on the outside edge. I even use my left hand, which isn't as strong as my right. I always knew I was different. ;-) BTW, it seems amazing to me that H&S didn't require the Beetle engine to have a guard as a normal fitment - it's quite a hazard making the finer engine adjustments.
