Todd... I recently purchased a trailer to haul my cars around in addition to hauling some landscaping materials. Like you, I was concerned over the weight and size of the trailer. In the end, I happened across a used aluminum trailer at a local dealer. It's 14 ft long dual axle and weighs only 1500 lbs. Comparable steel trailers can weigh as much as 1000 lbs more. As you'll be towing with a V6, that's something to consider. Towing the empty trailer in the mountains with our 315 ft lbs of torque V8 Toyota SUV netted a top speed of only 55 mph on some mountain passes. A V6 would have put us down around 40 or 45. Besides the weight savings, the other benefit to aluminum is that the trailer will always look like new. There's no paint to chip or fade. Now the bad news... cost. The dramatically reduced weight and durability will cost you twice as much. I paid $3000 for mine used... they're over $4000 new. You can find steel trailers all day long for half that much. In the end though, I think overall cost of ownership will be less, especially when it comes time to sell. Besides the trailer... you'll need to pick up a trailer brake controller (about $130). I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy. Let me know if you have any further questions. -Rich -----Original Message----- From: Hanson,Todd [mailto:todd.hanson@gartner.com] Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2003 6:12 PM To: Type 3 list Subject: [T3] Car trailer? Need advice... I am considering buying a car trailer to haul the Fastback around. What type should I consider? I want the shortest (length) trailer possible (easier storage). I want the trailer to have "normal" size tires, not those tiny little tires I see on utility trailers. Lastly, I'd like to be able to use the trailer for hauling two motorcycles. I have a truck with a V6 -- will that be sufficient? What changes do I need to make to my truck? I haven't decided on an open (flat bed style) or closed (box style) trailer yet -- I suppose an open trailer would be fine. What should I expect to pay? I am totally new to car trailers -- please offer advice.
