Aye carumba!  That seems (to me) to be a bit steep, even if it
*is* a '97.  We had a new clutch put into my wife's '89 W/C 
Cabriolet (A1 platform) last year, and it was ~$550-$600 total,
including the unexpected replacement of a CV axle.  

Is this quote from the dealer, or an independant garage?  Shop 
around, you can probably find a better deal.

I was thinking the exact same thing last week when I had to 
go to the dealership parts counter for a water hose on the
Cabriolet, and it cost $40!  Granted, it's a 'Y' hose, but
still...
