Valve adjustment will take you an hour or so the first time, 10 minutes once you understand what you're doing. Oil change is fine, little oil will come out of the valve covers with the engine off. > 3. Does a compression test indicate the health of the valves / seats? Yes, those and the piston/cylinders/rings. > 4. Next to the coil there is a ceramic component that I ASSume is a > resistor. I can not find that part in any VW wiring diagrams. What is > it for? Is this standard on a type 3? Probably means that the PO replaced the coil with an aftermarket coil that required a resistor, a mistake. A OE coil with no resistor would be more reliable. OE, not a new Bosch replacement. > 5. The oil breather has 2 pipes coming off of it. One is steel and > goes straight down. The other is coming off the side of the breather. > Where is this one SUPPOSED to go? The PO had a piece of hose coming off > of it and going down also. Can I plug this one since there is another? It originally went to the air cleaner so the case vapors could be burned. You can plug the hose only if the lower pipe is open at the bottom. ONE of them must be able to breathe. > 6. This is a 12 volt system. > Is this just the heater that heats up the choke? What is the effect of > not having it connected? That's the choke. It should be connected, but 12V will burn it up. It has probably already been destroyed. If not, it's worth something to the 6V folks. If it's not connected (or disabled) your engine will run way too rich. > 8. The timing marks on the pulley should be referenced to what on the > engine? Perhaps I am missing something? It has been a long time since > I did this kind of work, but I recall chevy's have a little pointer > above the damper pulley with timing marks. There is a boss sticking out of the rear of the fan housing. It has a flat on one side. Align the flat with the timing mark. This was made to view from above. ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
