Thank you to all that replied. It was very helpfull. I now have some more.
When I bought the car, it did not charge. It was advertuised as having
a broken belt. I discovered that the battery was installed backwards. I
fixed that, but it still did not charge. I have replaced the voltage reg,
with no luck. I did the test as indicated on Speedy Jim's website
http://www.nls.net/mp/volks/ I determined that my generator was bad. I
bought a new one today. The person at the local VW shop had a bosch for
$125, but said I could buy a rebuilt one for a lot less at AutoZone. I went
there. Their computer had one for a beetle and one for a squareback. They
only had one for the beetle in stock, so I bought it. When I went to
install it, it seemed that the old one was in backwards. I installed it
according to the rotational arrow on it. This puts the commutator toward
the back of the car. I figured the PO installed it backward, after all, the
battery was in backward right? Now I see the Chilton's book shows the type
3, and the original was in right. Could THIS be the difference in the
squareback vs. beetle model? I do have it installed correctly according to
the directional arrow on it. BTW it is a rebuilt BOSCH generator. WIll
this work out OK for me? I have not put power to it yet, only the
polarizing step listed in the directions. The car has not been run yet.
Thanks,
Brad
