Had a fun trip this weekend, courtesy of the '69 Squareback. We went to Big Basin to see gigantically-tall redwoods. We packed camping gear on the roof rack, and took the bikes (two grownup bikes on a rack, and a trailer cycle on top of the camping gear) -- http://vwtype3.org/bigbasin.jpg At the walk-in campsite where we stayed, I noticed something about the thirty-odd vehicles in the parking lot at some point. Nearly all were "trucks" in my book -- SUVs, minivans, and pickups -- save for four sedans. These were two BMWs, a Jetta, and our Squareback. Go figure. Fahrvergnuegen, maybe? On the way home, we lunched in Boulder Creek. I spotted a nice '80s road bike on the cheap at a garage sale, needing nothing but air in the tires and removal of the sheepskin seat cover (heh). A wee bit small for me, but I'll find a good home for it. Popped off the wheels, and put the whole thing behind the back seat. At this point we're up to four bikes, camping gear, food & clothes, a trunk full of tools and spares, and three happy campers. I can still see out the back window. Bwahaha. As we pulled out of Boulder Creek... "A Fastback for sale! Should we stop?" After the bike, it seemed like I might be on a roll. Better sense prevailed, and we kept rolling. On the way home, we got grins and waves from a couple in a red Passat wagon with two bikes on the top. I'll see if I can find time to wash the Square tonight -- it deserves it! -Greg ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
