BenD=> Engine picks up nice and smooth when => I rev it in the driveway. ... When I drive it, it => doesn't want to accelerate. ... backfires through => the carb. I'm no single-carb expert by any means, but I did have one on my first Square. Does that count? Backfire (through the carb, the real thing) is bad bad bad! It's also pretty rare. How do you know that's what's happening -- air cleaner blown off? (Yes? Be sure you have a good fire extinguisher handy at all times!) If it is indeed backfiring, this sounds like a gross timing problem. If you haven't already, you'll want to doublecheck that you have the correct firing order and that it agrees with your distributor drive. I'd want to eliminate the possibility that you're firing 180 degrees out. If, on the other hand, you're getting loud pops under load from the exhaust -- postignition -- I'd first look for overfueling, maybe a rich accelerator pump. (Corrolary to that, make sure the air intake is not obstructed.) As for your Type 2 cruising speed, there are many factors that could be blocking performance: compression loss (cracked or loose head, rings), spark loss (leaky wires, plug-jumping, loose coil feed connection), exhaust obstruction, fuel obstruction (cruddy main jet, low pump pressure), etc. If you're losing oil I think that compression test might prove instructive.
