I called a VDO repair shop in North Carolina and he said that this wire cannot be fixed, they just buy a replacement unit. He said that the wire is a special 'resitance wire' and that it is attached in a special way. Probably with some sort of resitance friendly solder. So, I guess I'll be buying a new/used sender.
