[T3] My VW weekend

Hi all,

I have spent all weekend working on my 1500N. I am pretty pleased with my
purchase. I have put some pic's up on my webpage under the My VW's section
(http://members.tripod.com/~superkafer/myvws.htm).

The sway bar had not been greased for a while, because it was really hard to
pump the grease gun, and it took a lot of pumping before fresh grease came
out. Is there anything I should check other than the free play to make sure
nothing is damaged? I think the bars had been greased regularly as they
didn't take as much grease, so the top ones must have been overlooked.

I got the indicators working, that was just a bad flasher. I found a loose
connection on the brake light switch which was stopping the brake lights
from coming on. Someone has wired up a horn button halfway down the steering
column (in the most inconvenient place they could put it), so I will have a
look at the normal switch and see what is up with that. Should a '65 have a
wire running down the middle of the column?

I replaced the generator, as the old one was completely fried. I managed to
get a rebuilt one. The regulator was also fried as well as a burnt out
generator bulb. I got all of that working without too much drama, although I
had to put some new terminals on the wires as the ones that were on there
were poorly crimped on.

I also tidied up some of the wiring in the engine compartment because some
of those were only twisted together and wrapped with tape!

I checked the valves and all of them were loose. The oil screen was pretty
clean when I changed the oil so that is a good sign. I swapped the 009 that
was in it for a vacuum unit and timed the engine. I also swapped the coil
for a old Bosch one (it had an Echlin (sp?) 'high performance' one in
there).

I checked on the choke because it smelled like it was running a bit rich.
The choke was working, but there was no fast idle. I couldn't see the cam
under the choke cover, is it somewhere else on these 32PHN's?

It had a miss and the tuneup didn't cure it. I think it is something with
the carburettor, it might need a clean or something. It is a mid to high RPM
miss, it only happens when accelerating. Thoughts anyone?

There is also a rattle, I think it is coming from the fan housing, it might
be one of the bolts has come loose or something. The plastic plug is missing
from the centre of the fan pulley, were these installed on the earlier
models? I am wondering if it fell off, and some of the bits are rattling
around in there.

It is not a loud rattle, I thought it might have been the tinfoil on the
bottom of the engine hatch crinkling from wind while it was going along, but
it happens at idle, I just wasn't listening carefully enough. I got a
plastic tube and stuck it over the timing hole as a stethoscope and I can
hear it quite clearly.

After driving it for a bit, the brakes have improved, so I think it was just
rust.

Well, that was my VW weekend. I am taking it for a WOF tomorrow, to make it
road legal, so hopefully it will pass.
