I found that the actual polishing step required the piece to be "warm" -- sitting in the sun for a while on a pleasant day was enough. Below some warmish threshold temperature, my buffing wheel would just kinda push the compound around and make black paste. When warm, the compound would lift away and leave shiny aluminum behind. I also read a bit on the Web by somebody who was polishing an aluminum intake manifold. He would actually warm the piece in the oven before polishing. Also, Todd, are these the Volksmags?
