I am just finishing building a mock-up of the Ford GT (the modern reincarnation of the Ford GT40 from 60s LeMans fame) and there are some wooden parts on it. Mock-ups are still used today, but they are generally CNC milled from foam or clay. Many parts are "grown" using rapid prototyping processes like stereolithography and selective laser sintering. All these processes let you go directly from the CAD on the computer to physical parts before making large investments in tooling and such. The real push today is to go digital and design on the tube. With modern CAD systems and solid modelling you can really accomplish alot. Boeing built and sold the first real 777 airliner. All the design and prototyping was done on the computer. The auto industry is not there yet, but we are getting closer.
