If it's hitting the tin then it is most likely that your distributor drive gear 
is installed wrong. Beetles get this gear installed in a different orientation 
from type 3s and many mechanics get in the beetle habit and just do the type 3 
one wrong. 

This CAN be fixed but it's scary, because if you drop the washers into the case 
you'll be taking the whole engine apart to get them out.

Study your manual and see if you can determine whether yours is wrong.
