One more thing that occurred to me: do you remember the pic that I showed you once of the 1969 Type 34 engine, taken from the user manual? The distributor had plug wires with L-shaped connectors. If the distributor was of the same kind as mine, which was, as you say, slightly taller than the earlier vacuum-only type, then that may explain why the L-shaped connectors were necessary.
