JimA=> I'm really concerned that you probably are => running 40 deg of advance under some full load => circumstances. I'm also running at high altitude, and I'm working with very highly qualified mechanics and machinists who handle carbed VWs and Porsches every day, in an area where vintage VWs are common daily drivers. We've been around this issue several times, my friend, and I appreciate your concerns; be assured that they've been carefully considered by people with a hundred or so years of combined experience under tough conditions. I'm not just talking out of my hat here. => Those engines will run just fine on just the mech adv. I've worked through several mechanical-only distributors, and while I can't offer numbers to prove it, over the course of experiment I became concerned that they can build heat by running at constant full advance while cruising. Long, high-speed cruises in hot, dry weather are not everyday conditions for most old cars outside the Southwest, but they really test cooling systems and timing choices. With timing backed off some at speed, we believe we're getting better cooling; the vacuum provides additional boost for acceleration on the highway, where I've also found weak performance from mechanical distributors. These factors make the FI distributor attractive, and while I won't make a positive conclusion until I've put 50K miles on a set of heads with it, so far I and my mechanics are quite pleased with the results. And to answer your conjecture, my carbs are original to my '66, modified for larger displacement, dual-port heads and normal driving conditions here.
