Last month's VW Trends had a fairly lengthy article about this and IIRC it said the same -- that there's no point in using an oil that keeps the particulate matter in suspension so well unless you're using the full-flow filter. I had heard the talk about how synth oil "resists heat and therefore is not good for an engine that is trying to use oil to wisk heat away," but the article pretty much debunked that myth. Less friction=less heat seemed to be the main benefit of synthetics in their ability to resist viscosity breakdown.
