Late type 3 calipers are the same as early type 4 (914) calipers. Late type 3 rotors are the same as all type 4 (914) rotors. Late type 4 (914) calipers are the same as early type 4 (914) calipers, except that the late ones are wider, have wider center slots, have longer pistons, and take thicker pads. They also take a different rebuild kit that has a different boot to allow for more extension of the pistons. All these pistons are 42mm, unlike the similar type 1 Ghia calipers, which are 40mm. I have a customer with a 72 type 4 which has the late type 4 calipers. I think it is a late 72 and would have been one of the first to get the late calipers. Like the type 3 early/late borderline, I don't think this borderline occurred on an exact model year either. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
