I just realized that if they used a magnetic reluctance sensor instead of the 
Hall effect sensor then we would get the same result without differentiating. 
Is there any chance that this is what they do?

This would seem like a simple solution to the problem, but I seem to recall 
that magnetic reluctance sensors in distributors had some problems that led 
them into disfavor.
