I think all 68-73 type 3 distributors had vacuum advance and centrifugal
advance. Certainly all of the FI distributors did, and that covers the US.

In addition, the 72 FI distributor had vacuum retard, and I think the 72 dual
carb dist also had vacuum retard, but Dave Hall will have to clarify that. For
your application I would advise against one of these "triple advance" dists.

The earlier dists have more advance, so I prefer them, My favorite is the 68-9
MT FI "L" dist which has about 28 deg of mech adv plus 10 deg of vacuum adv.
You could use any of these without the vac part, but you would lose out on some
fuel economy in doing so. As Shad pointed out, you can use the extra advance
when you're not operating at full throttle, and this gives you more power and
better fuel economy under those conditions.

I have good used "L" dists available or I can rebuild one of yours if you
prefer.
