Hi Greg, Well we got up this morning and after performing all of the below listed steps the car actually started up and sounded much better than it did. The only problem that we now noticed was it seemed to be smoking as where before it was not. Geez, talk about a puzzle. My husband seemed to think that it may be running to rich and therefore, he will have to go back in and adjust the airflow [hope I translated this right.] I am the one who does all the e-mailing since I type much faster. It was also suggested to us by a Russ Wolfe that when starting this car we should first turn the key a couple of times before cranking the engine, which worked well this morning. In any event all of you are a Godsend. Please bear with us for the next few days until our Bentley Manual arrives. Thanks. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Greg Merritt" <gregm@vwtype3.org> To: <type3@vwtype3.org> Sent: Friday, June 20, 2003 6:21 PM Subject: Re: [T3] 69 squareback automatic > At 5:00 PM -0700 6/20/03, anthony&rhonda wrote: > >just bought. hard to start when cold, runs fine when warm, WHAT COULD BE > >PROBLEM WITH STARTING COLD? > > > Adjust the valves, the point gap, and ignition timing; all of > these will make the engine run poorly, and are straightforward to > adjust to correct specifications.
