not to stand up for GEX or anything, but I believe any rebuilt or new engine needs to have the heads re-torqued after a certain mileage(anywhere from 500 to 5000? I am not sure) -kevin -----Original Message----- From: Hal Sullivan [mailto:tristessa@pon.net] Sent: Monday, June 16, 2003 2:00 AM To: type3@vwtype3.org Subject: [T3] Heads? Studs? I was checking out that dreaded "loose head" noise this afternoon on my Fastback. I found four loose on one head .. all lower. I haven't *done* anything yet, because I'm not sure of a few things: 1) Should I loosen all the nuts and retorque to spec with the proper torquing pattern? Or would it be okay to just retorque the four that are loose working from the inside of the head to the outside? 2) Is this a "definate" sign of studs pulling? Or is it possible that the nuts worked loose and just need to be retorqued. 3) If it turns out to be studs pulling, does anyone have at least a "guesstimate" of how long those repair stud things typically last? I'm hoping that maybe someone (GEX) at the company (GEX) that built this POS engine (GEX) which will remain nameless (GEX) didn't torque them right in the first place. I'm also hoping that if push comes to shove I can cheat for a while with the "repair studs" and get another 2K miles out of this thing .. it's got less than 2K on it in the first place. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
