<x-flowed>They still say that in the new manuals - my brothers late model Golf GTI turbo flattened it's battery after 2 months of not being used and i jump started that ok (even though the manual said not to)

They can be jump started, (from another cars battery), BUT, be extremely careful about getting the cables connected wrong. I DO NOT recommend jumps starting them with one of the generator units that some emergency service trucks use. Some of these units will put out over 18V.
