They seem to soak up dirt and body oil over the years and become incredibly stiff. Take them out and wash them in a bucket of water and laundry soap. Churn and work them around a lot and repeat this until you can stand the color the water turns. Once you're done, you'll want to dry them quickly so the fittings don't rust. You could pad them between some towells until they are dry to the touch and then hang them in front of a fan to carry off the remaining moisture. Once dry, there may be some places that could benefit from a tiny drop of oil. I'm not sure about this, I've never done it. Most of my belts are fine, but I know that Dave Hall had to suffer thru a too-tight belt that would not adjust all the way to Parma. I guess that's another thing I should look at this summer. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
