Front trunk release is also on the left side, in the glovebox from 1970. I was putting an alarm in the Variant - used the hole alongside the VIN plate on the front panel to save drilling, and realised it was one of a pair that matched the ones the other side (left-hand side of car) which held the clip for the outer of the release cable. Did any markets use a front trunk release running along the right of the car? (ie passenger side for LHD, driver's side for RHD?). Our '89 Jetta has it that side. Dave.
