The reason for this is that the 924 was built on a lot of Super beetle parts, as it was another joint development between VW and Porsche. The front end is Super beetle, the rear end is IRS Super beetle. The 924 had a front mounted watercooled I-4 engine with a rear mounted transmission. VW backed out of the project as they were afraid the car would be another flop. Porsche had invested so much money that they continued anyways, and the 924/944 series has been one of Porsches most succesful models.
