EdwardM=> 'finned' valve covers ... => heat transfer should be improved. My thoughts 24 => hours later... if it was an easy heat xfer improvement => why wouldn't the VW engineers have adopted it? Your second thought is good. There's a thick gasket between the cover and the head, so little heat is transferred directly from the head, which is what needs cooling. the fins might have a small effect on oil temp, but not anything like the effect you can have by getting your fuel mixture and valve clearances right.
