I think you're exactly right. There may be something wrong with your switches, 
or the extra wires are shorted together, or ....

The simple way to get this all working again properly would be to buy 2 new 
late switches (~$6 each) and get a late switch harness which would replace the 
early one you have. These are all easy to install once you jack up the car. 
Then you would have brake light switches AND a working warning light.

OTOH, the Brazilian switches that are available now don't tend to last long and 
everyone seems to agree that the old switches seem to last forever. On top of 
that, the warning light doesn't do much good; it only tells you a problem AFTER 
you've already felt your foot go to the floor and you've already started to 
panic. Not really a good time to flash a red light in your face....   ;-)

I have some late harnesses and Brazilian switches if you want to go that route.
