Cleaned some connections and now wiggling the key helps. What's the 
"well-known" cure for that? Wiggle the key and smile? ;)

Oh, got the clock working and the original Bendix AM radio reinstalled 
and (almost) working too. I'll probably start looking at brakes 
tomorrow.
