You need a tune-up gauge called a Dwell-Tach meter. These used to be common, 
but they may be hard to find these days, since ignition points have long since 
disappeared from modern cars. You should be able to find a used one somewhere, 
possibly ebay.

As long as the generator light goes off when you speed up there's no problem.
