While I've certainly seen a lot of poor work that came out of dealerships, I seriously doubt if this is the way yours was done originally. The dealerships had the installation kits to do it right and I don't think they would have gone to more trouble and drilled a hole in the bottom of the airbox where there is also commonly water, causeing a water leak, too.
