Yesterday I went into Boise (a 40 mile drive for me now, I've moved since the last invasion). On my way home I passed by a junkyard that I went to many times in the past to buy parts for my Volvo. I had never seen an aircooled VW there. Parked out front was a late model square. From the road, I could tell that it was missing the rear hatch and the hood. Usually I just drive on, but I decided to stop and check this one out. It was parked in front of the yard instead of inside. This place usually parks their new arrivals there before putting them in the yard. I went inside and asked the guy at the counter what the deal was with it. He said that someone had just dropped it off there a couple nights ago, and just that morning, he found out who left it. Turned out to be a guy at a body shop who had this sitting around for a couple years. I asked about getting parts for it and he said he couldn't sell anything because he didn't have a title for it yet. Then he said if I wanted anything, just go get it. I told him that there were a few parts I'd like to cut off the body. Then I offered to haul it away for him so he didn't have to fight trying to get a title. He told me that if I had a way to haul it, I could have it. This morning, I drove back with my tow dolly and brought it home. I have NEVER seen a type 3 with rockers this solid. Now I have 8 type 3's at my house. My wife thinks it's getting to be too much. Here's the list: 1965 Notchback - current restoration project 1972 Notchback - next project 1973 Squareback - waiting for an engine transplant 1970 Fastback - runner, waiting to go up for sale 1971 Squareback - parts car, waiting for the sawzall (halfback material) 1970 Squareback - the new one, also going to be under the sawzall 1969 Squareback - another one waiting for the sawzall 1971 Notchback - the rustest VW I've ever seen, sawzall material The good thing about the three Square parts cars is that they all have perfect pans. I'll probably wait until September to cut them up. The heat is too much for me this summer. We've had 9 days in a row of 100+ degree temperatures, a new record for us. 15 days this month have been over 100. Looks like Brian Fye moved just in time. If the DDB were a little closer, I'd let them have some fun with these. The moral of this story: By simply asking, I got a free parts car with a perfect front clip and rockers needed for my 72 notch.
