Great reply! When you pointed out 'torque' vs. 'preload' it all suddenly made sense. I understand all the variances involved and understand it wasn't an exact formula -- not confusing to me at all. Heck, even determining the amount of preload...I wouldn't know where to begin i.e. how much is too much? what is being fastened/clamped? what conditions will it be under (water, acid, space, temp, etc.)? etc. I think I'll just use pre-established values and adjust accordingly ;-) Thanks!!!!
