yes it is a real shame they cut the panels...my door panels were otherwise in very good condition. at this point thought I was thinking of putting speakers in the door as a way of covering the holes put in there. and it would be nice to have a stereo. I installed one in my bus, but as my bus is 6V, the transformer can't really handle any power draw from the stereo(i can barely hear the radio when on the highway). So I think I might move that stereo to my sqbk. I already have a pair of speakers that I think will fit(they came free with the stereo, pretty cheap speakers, but they work. I understand that water goes through the door-i was thinking of putting some plastic over the speaker to prevent water from directly hitting it. the wires on my car seem to be in ok condition-actually only of the passenger side-the driver side wires are missing I think... I thought that thing on my dash was a speaker grill-now I just need to see if there is still a speaker in there...how do you access this, from under the dash or from on top? thanks -kevin somerville, ma '65 kombi '71 sqbk -----Original Message----- From: Jim Adney [mailto:jadney@vwtype3.org] > Is there a stock speaker location or were these an aftermarket installation. > some PO of mine cut holes in the door for the speakers...one of which was > missing when I bought the car, and the other was disintegrating.... There is only a single stock speaker location: under the center of the dash. For stereo installations most people cut holes in the door panels, which is a real shame if the OE door panels are still nice. Speakers mounted in the doors usually fail quickly because they get water on them. This could be done differently, but it takes too much time and most people don't realize how much water comes down there when it rains. The wires to the speakers are also a problem. They are usually installed so that they flex quite a bit every time the door is opened and shut. The wire usually breaks within a couple of years, sooner in cold weather. This is a bigger problem with the driver's side door, because that one gets more "exercise." -- ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list | mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org
