It's true that BOsch sets a wear limit on the commutators. I really don't know how much they allow, but my feeling has always been that a slightly undersized one would be better than a marginal one that is out of round. Of course the mica may have to be undercut after turning, but the shops will be able to do both. Armature lathes are set up to do both operations quickly and easily. My old Bosch price lists show prices for new generators as well as rebuilts. NEW prices were over $200 ten years ago. I doubt if new ones are even in the recent catalogs, although a generator rebuilt by Bosch may have a number of new parts, including (possibly) a new armature. Unless you paid over $200 for a generator, you can be assured that it was a rebuilt unit. I find that the ones actually rebuilt by Bosch are easy to obtain (often requiring a few days wait) and are excellent quality. I've been disappointed in the quality of Bosch generators rebuilt by Lucas. Local rebuilders can be good or bad.... -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
