It is only on the backing plate of the brake assembly. Any ideas? If your car is a swing axle, then the transmission fluid goes all the way out to the wheel bearing and there is a seal just outboard of that bearing. If the seal leaks, there is a bleed hole that will divert that leakage out to the inside face of the backing plate, so as to keep it away from the brakes. This will only work until the seal goes really badly, then it will make a mess. If the retaining plate, with the 4 bolts is loose, then this can leak when the seal is still good, but then it will usually leak inside the drum with the brakes. This seal is fairly easy to replace, and readily available. Swing axle beetles use the same seal and gasket kit. Get the whole kit, which has the seal, 2 gaskets and, O-rings and a cotter pin. -- Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
