[T3] Z-bar mod ala Bill Fisher
<x-flowed> Last summer I rebuilt the stock Z-bar in Phillip. This is the
overload spring/camber compensater for swing axles It needed a new
bushing which I made myself with a sheet of 1/4" EP rubber wrapped
around the steel spacer.
Anyway, I also added an extra rubber bumper to preload the setup and
eliminate any lag in engagement. I just had my Bill Fisher "How to
hotrod your VW" open and his diagram points to the extra bumper going
above the axles, whereas I put it below. With the rearend sagged over
the years this is the position that doesn't preload it while static.
Does it matter if it's above or below? The swing axle has a tendency
to "jack" in the corners, which would mean I want the extra spacer under
the axle to engage sooner, right? The scenario the camber compensater
works against is both inner and outer cornering wheels in positive
camber. Particularly the outer one which equals a rollover. I've
turned this around in my head for an hour now and am thoroughly convinced...
