Hi all, I went and picked up the top ball joints for my Type 3 today. On the way back, my '63 beetle starts making a horrible rattle while going down the motorway, so I cut the engine and pulled over, and had to get towed home. I pulled the rocker covers off, and I found it had dropped #1 exhaust. Since that left me with no road legal cars that go, I got stuck in and replaced the ball joints, it only took me 3/4 hour to do both sides. I went to take it for it's WOF and I got that fine, but when I left the VW workshop, one of the mechanics that was following behind me pulled me over and told me I had a wobbly back wheel. Back to the workshop I went, and borrowed their jack, and found that the wheel was not on straight because it was not sitting over the screws that hold the drum onto the hub, so I straightened that up, and went home. After getting home I took the washer out of the fuel pump that I installed last week because the car was still running badly. Tonight I used it again and it still runs just as bad on the hills, so perhaps something else is causing it. Funny thing is, the car was running perfectly before I started fiddling with the fuel pump. I guess the morel of the story here is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" ;-) I will pull the spark plugs & the tops off the carbs tomorrow to have a look if I can trace the problem. I also got a beetle rebuild kit today, to rebuild one of the spare German beetle pumps I have to replace the Brazilian pump that is in my fastback at the moment and see if that helps any. The new ball joints make a bit of a difference when going down the motorway, the car doesn't rattle over the bumps any more, and seems generally smoother.
