That is VW's recommendation, too, but I never found it necessary. Certainly I changed them religously at first, but as time passed I realized that they just filtered a rather clean substance anyway and decided to see how important it was. Eventually I discovered that they never clog up or limit flow unless the overflow hose has broken allowing road dirt and water to wash in there. What I did was to install a new one and then let the old one dry out. If it was full of dirt it would be hard to blow thru, but my old ones were always as free flowing as the new ones, once they dried out.
