Self preservation is a pretty basic instinct. ;-) The only thing we can learn from this is that for some brief moment the generator must have been working again, otherwise there was no way you could have had such an arc. I assume you didn't slip and short something out accidentally to cause this. I also assume you were doing this test with the voltmeter connected from the D+ term to ground and the DF term shorted to ground. In a worst case there ought to be a automotive electrics shop somewhere no farther away than Boise who could fix this up for you with no difficulty.
