When my father had been unable to turn the '64 1500S engine over due to a fuel lock from parking nose up a steep drive with full tank, luckily he freewheeled down the slope onto level ground and left it for a while, when it started fine. He mentioned this to the VW service manager later, who then showed my father a Type 3 rod that had been bent by 'bump' starting due to this problem, so it did happen occasionally! They fitted the electro-magnetic cut-off valves to stop it recurring. Dave.
