It starts with a 3 because it is a type 3. The 6 is bodystyle - 
Squareback, 2 is the model year - 1972, the second 2 is a check digit to 
designate that it was the 2nd decade that these VINs were used, so that 
two VINs couldnt be confused. and 114443 is the serial number for the 
1972 model year.
