Per dont worry so much. The diaphram part of the pump needs to be some what
plyable for the pump to move. If the gas has made this hard the pump is
shot. Second the  spark is there because they are breaker points, perfectly
natural.  These pumps usualy dont work because of the hard diafram and not
electrical. And when you do have it running right it will suck the gas up
from the tank without being primed. Do you have any reprint of trouble
shooting manuals? I trust its a BN2 and not a BN4 like Don is speaking of
for his thing.
