<x-flowed>The water probably got in through the uncapped hole after it got past the door seal. Are the seals around your door check straps and the hinge seals in good shape? Could be getting in there too. I've always wondered whether VW made a provision for draining water that might collect in there. I guess your experience plus the fact that VW had no less than 9 rubber seals on each hinge post tells us there isn't. In late 1965 (I think) VW wisely changed the design so that the hinges surface mount on the posts, eliminating this problem. Can you work some cotton rope or something in through the uncapped hole to try to wick the water out?
