The problem ended up being that the actual steering shaft rusted through and broke mostly off (makes sense - increased torque because I was parallel-parking at the time). So, the offset shaft parts were grinding the hell out of the inside of the steering column. Bented and dented it up pretty badly. So, New shaft, new column, new bearing (freebie that was "a new one [they] had at the shop"!!). Also he fixed brights clicker (also gratis). This was my first experience with this new mechanic - I am utterly impressed. Along with the steering work, I had him get a stuck spark plug out of cyl #4 (which turned out to be a major job - it was really stuck), changed the shocks (rear passenger's upper mount broke off inside the frame, so they had to cut it open and re-weld it back up), and had him change the transaxle oil. After getting it back, I also found that he had fixed one of my dash lights (Now I can see how fast I'm going at night, not just how much gas I have). All this for $455. My former mechanic would have charged me a good $800-1000, I know it. I switched because I took this car in for a quick brake-bleed (a bit of sponginess after changing rear drums - figured I got some air in the lines or something) and they actually came out WORSE! So, if anyone in Chicago needs a mechanic (I, for one, am not one for doing car work in the snow), Rudi at European-American Auto Repair is unbelievable. He's up at Lincoln and Addison (right by the burrito place by the Brown Line stop at Addison). Also, he talks just like Rainier Wolfcastle (a.k.a. McBain) from the Simpsons, which is an entertaining bonus. --boinger On Thu, 2003-01-23 at 16:54, Jim Adney wrote: > On 23 Jan 2003 at 10:39, Jeff Vier wrote: > > > I think that some Bad Stuff happened to my steering system in my '67 > > Squareback today.
