[T3] dropped spindles and the origin of fi

i had an interesting conversation with my wife's
friend's husband today. he owns a, well, i guess it
could be called a machine shop, but it's more than
that. he manufactures all kinds of weird stuff. he has
two mold presses, and all kinds of other crazy
machines. anyway, i was talking to him about producing
some dropped spindles for a type 3. whenever my wife
an his wife get together, he and i talk cars, mainly
type 3's, since he owned one once.

anyway, i was asking him what it would take to produce
dropped spindles for a type 3. not cut and welded, but
forged. he guessed the tooling and everything would
cost about $40K-80K. just guessing... that pretty much
snubbed my grand idea of getting rich by developing
type 3 dropped spindles... damn... maybe i could sell
dropped spindles for types 1 and 2 and still get
rich...

anyway, he also told me something i'd never heard of
before. we were talking about the fuel injection
system on the '68 type 3. he told me that he thought
it was developed by the bendex corp, and bosch bought
the rights to it, but it was and still may be patented
by bendex. anyone ever heard of this before?? that
would be pretty cool if an american company was behind
this early fi system.
