It operates on the "sprague clutch" princple. As long as the cable is
turning in the forward direction, the clutch slips, and nothing happens.
When the speedometer cable goes in the reverse direction, the clutch
locks up, and the switch is made up.
The thing I didn't like about them, is that you had to start backing up
before the backup lights came on. You didn't give any warning to someone
behind you, and also at night, you couldn't see where you were going
before you started moving.
