I agree with Keith about the ball joints, but I think you're definetly onto 
something with the central bell crank shaft. Any play in that would certainly 
cause problems. I've no experience with them; can they be rebushed or would it 
be easier to replace the shaft? Sometimes a teflon sleeve will work well in a 
situation like this.
