internal rectifiers so the output you see at the terminal is DC but older
ones generally had external regulators, just as a generator would.
Alternators are more efficient than generators and they dont have
commutators which is thier advantage.

I do notice that my cars with alternators dont keep up at idle though...
just like the generator cars, the lights get dim at idle.
