One of my best type 3s was the 71 AT I bought for my wife. I paid $75 for it 
and drove it home. I replaced about 4 quarts of oil in the 5 mile trip; the 
case was cracked.

Once home I dried it out because it had a shot out side window, replaced that 
window, rebuilt the front axle and replaced the bent lower right trailing arm, 
and did a temp fix on the case which held for 6 months while I built an engine 
for it. The new engine outlasted the car, which we drove for more than 10 
years.

All thing considered I've never gotten a truly cheap car, because the ones with 
the really low purchase prices always soak up a lot of after-purchase repair 
expenses. Those expenses never included a $350 tach, however. Most of the fancy 
crankshafts I buy have actually cost less than half that....
