I gather that this is the actual latch, not the door handle, that you're
talking about. I'll have to look at one to be sure, but I suspect that it is
originally held in place by peening, so that's what I'd try first. I don't
think any kind of chemical (epoxy, etc) will do what you need. Your best bet
might be to find a junkyard replacement. Or you might have some luck with
soldering, but getting the gap in there clean enough will be a problem with
anything you do other than peening. I'd worry about all the other parts that
you'd have to overheat if you brazed or welded, but TIG welding might be quick
and localized enough that there would be minimal damage to the parts around it.
I have some good used latches here if you need one.
